Tuesday Night Tennis

Over the years, Connor has tried several sports.

We started with baseball, and had a good run from t-ball through rookie league (coach pitch) but came to a screeching halt after one fall ball season of major league (kid pitch). The games were long, pitching was new and often not great, there were past balls and steals and strikes that you could never hit (back to the new kids pitching again).

We moved to flag football. When the team was good and there were several wins over the season, Connor loved it. When the team was filled with new players and not always skilled players, and the wins were fewer and further between, he was less happy. He stuck it out for four seasons, but eventually aged out of the league in our area.

We tried lacrosse. His first season was a learning experience, but the team was good and there were lots of wins and lots of playing time for everyone to learn the game. His second season was mostly practices and drills and scrimmages. It was repetitive, hot and ultimately not his thing.

We've offered multiple other sports, but have come to the conclusion that Connor is just not going to be a sports team kind of kid. He doesn't love practices (and actually comes to loathe them when they happen three or four times every week, just as most parents do). He likes certain sports, but doesn't love any of them.

So we've resigned ourselves to just signing him up for activities that are more about exercise and learning a skill set than being competitive and requiring major time commitments.

For his birthday this year, Grammy offered a six-week tennis program. Two hours, one night a week. Much more his speed than the other sports we've tried.

So here he is learning a new sport, one that is simply showing him form and technique so that he can have a fun sport to play leisurely or for the occasional exercise with family and friends ...
